theATL.social Late Winter Update
Hey Y’all, your friendly admin Michael here, busy shaking off the winter crud with some upgrades to theATL.social’s services. Here is the latest on what’s changed and what I’m working on.
A Fresh Look and Better Onboarding
The old design was getting a bit tired and looked like AI slop, so I’ve given the landing page and member site a much-needed glow up.
Beyond the aesthetics, new member signup experience has been overhauled. theATL.social now uses its own custom signup flow to provide a more human-friendly experience. This not only makes joining easier but allows us to better prevent spam signups. New member email correspondence has also been streamlined; previously, confirmation and welcome emails were sent separately—now, they arrive together in one step.
New Features for Contributors
For financial contributors at the $20/month level, you now have access to a new Mastodon daily post digest. This is a customized daily newsletter of Mastodon posts, making it easier to catch up on the conversation without being glued to the timeline.
AI helpers are used to create the daily digest, and due to the cost associated with those helpers, this feature is currently set at the $20/month level. However, as AI costs decrease, I anticipate that this feature will be able to be offered at the $10/month plan in the future.
Maintenance & Stability
A social network is only as good as the tech it runs on. I’m keeping our core software—Mastodon, Lemmy, and Pyfed (Peachpie)—fully up-to-date. The primary focus remains ensuring that the underlying infrastructure is stable, performant, and cost-effective.
Looking Ahead: The Big Picture
We are in a delicate time for social media. Large providers are increasingly subject to government interference, from coercion and harassment to subpoenaed records.
Of course, theATL is absolutely minuscule in comparison to the giants. While that doesn’t mean we’re invisible, there is a level of security in obscurity. To lean further into that privacy-first mindset, our next major step is adding a Matrix server in lieu of Discord. Given the concerns around age verification and the general lack of privacy on proprietary chat apps, providing a Matrix server feels like the natural next step for our community.
Supporting theATL
theATL remains a freemium service, but as new features and infrastructure are added, the need for financial contributors grows. Even at the $5/month level, your support is what allows theATL.social to stay independent and stable.
All the best, @admin (Michael)
